The governing party voted against the blockade at the UN in October 2024, along with the unanimous Latin American and Caribbean position, but signed that anti-Havana document on July 11, “along with the entire right wing that dominates the Legislative Assembly,” adds the text of support for the “An Embrace to Cuba” crusade, convened by renowned local journalist Rafael Ugalde.
Cabrera wrote that such a stance within Parliament was taken “in clear alignment with the imperialist policy of the US government, by signing a motion condemning the way in which the Cuban people exercise their sovereign right to a socialist democracy.”
In his message to the “Operation Embrace Cuba” campaign, Cabrera remembered Costa Rica’s positive vote in October 2024 in the thirty-second General Assembly vote against the US blockade, with a vote of 187 to 2 (US and Israel).
According to Cabrera, “a great window of opportunity is already underway with the transition to a multipolar world, where nations show the new strength of the Global South through concrete actions that show up their willingness to open mutually beneficial relations with the people of Cuba and their legitimate government.”
The social activist called for “along with each UN resolution against the blockade, massive international solidarity be activated through the mutually beneficial exchange of goods and services, with full respect for the sovereignty of a people who have chosen a socialist path for their development of all kinds.”
The “An Embrace to Cuba” campaign, which received Mario Cabrera Burgos’ message, was launched by award-winning Costa Rican communicator Rafael Ugalde, who called on his country and the rest of the world “to defend the people and government of the Caribbean island through it.”
