Indigenous groups called for a protest to demand compliance with the popular mandate, exactly two years after the consultation process in which 58.95 percent of Ecuadorians decided to leave the crude oil in Block 43, known as ITT (Ishpingo, Tiputini, and Tambococha) in the Amazonian Yasuni region.
The Waorani Nationality of Ecuador (NAWE), the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE), the Si al Yasuni collective, and other groups, affirmed that the Government has not closed the 247 oil wells.
They stated that the Executive is maintaining the oil infrastructure, despite the deadline set by the Constitutional Court to close everything by August 20, 2024.
In this context, they believe that this inaction violates the Constitution, international law, and the will expressed at the polls in 2023.
