France faces fifteenth wave of Covid-19

Paris, Oct 2 (Prensa Latina) France is facing an increase in Covid-19-related cases, suggesting the country is being hit by its fifteenth wave of the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, the press reported.

The pandemic that swept the world at the beginning of the decade has disappeared from the media radar for a couple of years; however, statistics released by the French Public Health agency appear to bring the issue back to the forefront, according to a report by Franceinfo.

Quoted by the channel, epidemiologist Mircea Sofonea considered that there are sufficient grounds to suggest a fifteenth wave, comments that come twelve days before the start of a new Covid-19 vaccination campaign.

According to Public Health France, a new variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, called XFG, is circulating in France, with an increase in medical visits for respiratory problems across all age groups.

The trend continued during the week of September 22-28, with suspected cases increasing by 16%.

Franceinfo notes that specialists lack the evidence to classify XFG, also known as “Frankenstein,” as more dangerous than the previous Omicron variants, but are continuing monitoring.

A new COVID-19 vaccination campaign will begin on October 14, targeting the elderly and vulnerable.
