Following internal conflicts stemming from disagreements over the leadership of one of Angola’s three historic political parties, which even reached the Constitutional Court, the organization held its 2nd Extraordinary Congress in Luanda on October 30-31, with more than 1,000 delegates in attendance.
The meeting focused on the election of a president, as part of the FNLA’s Central Committee challenged the continued leadership of Nimi-a-Nsimbi, who had assumed the presidency in 2021, with his legal term ending on September 30.
The party structure accused Nimi-a-Nsimbi of keeping the organization in political and organizational stagnation, so the special congress placed its confidence in Carlito Roberto, one of five candidates vying for the top post, who secured about 60 percent of the vote.
Supporters of Nimi-a-Nsimbi, however, have contested the process. They maintain that the party’s 6th Ordinary Congress is still scheduled to take place in Luanda from November 25 to 27, where Nimi-a-Nsimbi intends to run for the party’s top leadership position once again.
