Panamanians commemorate transfer of canal administration

Panama City, Dec 31 (Prensa Latina) Panamanians commemorate the transfer by the United States of the canal's administration, an event considered more than just an administrative act, but a symbol of sovereignty.

This nation not only efficiently managed the canal’s operation in these 26 years, but also fostered its development through new projects, including the expansion of the interoceanic waterway in 2016, addressed water crises, and increased its operational capacity for global maritime trade, of which it represents approximately six percent.

Historians remember that on December 31, 1999, while the country was awakening, Panama officially became the owner of one of the world’s most strategic infrastructures.

Since its inauguration in 1914, the Panama Canal has operated under US administration. Although the canal crossed the heart of the isthmus, its control remained beyond the reach of the Panamanian state.

With the creation of the Canal Zone, an enclave was established with its own laws, authorities, and a dynamic that separated it from the rest of the country.

The creation of the Panama Canal Authority (PCA) was key to this process. The technical training of Panamanian personnel aimed to ensure that, when the time came for the handover, operations would continue without interruption.
