In a telematic dialogue with Brazilian communicators and journalists, the diplomat made it clear that Cuba’s current situation also represents a battle of ideas related to principles like sovereignty, the people’s self-determination, and the right of each nation to choose its own path of development.
In this context, he denounced that the United States maintains a strategy aimed at provoking a humanitarian crisis and economic collapse on the island, with the purpose of generating social discontent that can serve as a pretext for more aggressive actions against the Cuban Revolution.
Cairo stated that the international community does not support such arguments and reiterated that Cuba does not pose a threat to Washington.
He denounced that U.S. measures aim at causing an economic strangulation of Cuba through sanctions, trade restrictions, and obstacles to oil supply.
He also questioned the impact of the secondary sanctions announced by Washington against individuals or companies that maintain business ties with Cuba and referred to the importance of Brazil analyzing how to protect Brazilian entrepreneurs and citizens interested in developing economic relations with the island.
Regarding the domestic situation, Cairo admitted that Cuba is facing complex times and pointed out that the government is promoting transformations aimed at modernizing the economy, expanding productive capacities, and preserving the social achievements of the Revolution. …
