“Cuba reaffirms its advocacy for nuclear disarmament as an urgent priority for humanity,” the island’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote on the social media platform X.
In the same message, the Cuban Foreign Ministry added that no people should live under the threat of nuclear destruction.
The United Nations (UN) General Assembly established September 26 as the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, an occasion for the international community to reaffirm its commitment to nuclear disarmament.
However, according to UN data, it is estimated that 12,187 nuclear weapons still exist today.
Countries possessing such weapons have well-funded, long-term plans to modernize their nuclear arsenals.
More than half of the world’s population still lives in countries that possess these types of weapons or are members of nuclear alliances.
