WTO Director criticizes protectionism of developed countries

Montevideo, May 5 (Prensa Latina) The Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala spoke out here against "the protectionism of large countries."

The WTO director called for a “reimagining of globalization” on a meeting at the headquarters of the Latin American Integration Association (ALADI), where 13 regional countries are represented.

“We are now facing protectionism and unilateral actions by big nations, some of which have already benefited from this system, and are now saying that globalization no longer works,” the authority said.

Okonjo-Iweala described as shameful the lack of progress on agricultural issues, despite the importance of food security, which she considered a major problem.

The leader further recalled that during the last two years progress was made on agreements such as the negotiations on harmful subsidies to fisheries.

“Cuba, Uruguay, Chile and Peru have ratified the agreement. So I need the rest to do so. It’s paramount, because we don’t want harmful subsidies that can encourage illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing of our oceans,” the WTO senior representative asserted.

The WTO director had meetings here with the FM Omar Paganini. She further met with the Ministers of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries, Fernando Matos, and of Industry, Energy and Mining Elisa Facio.
