Colombian figures praise Cuba’s advance in Covid-19 vaccine candidate

Bogota, Jun 24 (Prensa Latina) Colombian politicians praised Cuba's advances in the development of its vaccine candidate Abdala, which complies with the efficacy requirements set by the World Health Organization.

Senator and presidential pre-candidate Gustavo Petro stressed that Cuban science made the only vaccine made in Latin America with 92.2% efficacy.

In his opinion, an agreement between Cuba and Colombia to produce Abdala would guarantee the immunity of both peoples this year.

‘But sectarianism outweighs science’, he said in reference to the position of the government of Colombia towards Cuba.

The former senator and political activist Piedad Córdoba pointed out, in reference to the video in which Cuban scientists make public and celebrate the effeicacy of the Abdala vaccine candidate: ‘It’s not Pfizer or AstraZeneca with a budget in the billions. It is not the United States, Russia or China, with all their power. No. It is Cuba, an island embargoed and blockaded for decades celebrating the achievement of its own Covid-19 vaccine.’

Abdala was developed by the Center of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology of Cuba, while the Soberana 02 vaccine candidate was researched at the Finlay Institute of Vaccines and has an efficacy of 62% in two doses, although a third dose is yet to be applied during clinical trial.
