World War I-era shell discovered in Israel

Tel Aviv, Nov 16 (Prensa Latina) Israeli workers uncovered an artillery shell dating back to World War I (1914-1918) at a building site in Ganei Tikva, in central Israel, the press reported on Tuesday.

The Times of Israel stated that the device contained active explosives that were detonated by police sappers.

The shell has belonged to British forces deployed in the area to confront the Ottoman Empire.

Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula and historic Palestine, then under Turkish control, were a secondary theater of World War I.

The online newspaper noted that two portable rocket grenade launchers were found last year in East Jerusalem, the site of fierce battles during the 1967 conflict, when Israel occupied that region.
