Fungus causes meningitis in Durango, Mexico

Mexico City, Nov 11 (Prensa Latina) The outbreak of aseptic meningitis in Durango, Mexico, affecting 40 women and one man and causing three deaths, was caused by a fungus, as confirmed by Secretary of Health, Irasema Kondo.

The official declared that the patients are to undergo an immediate treatment and integral attention to the families must be kept up.

Kondo explained that the results of the studies of etiological factors determined the cause of peoples’ illness originated in various private hospitals in Durango.

In this matter, the Federal Commission for Protection Against Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS), continues looking up into the spreading mechanisms.

Once the cause of the outbreak was known, the treatment of the sick began, quite expensive, but the health of the patients is on the forefront, and comprehensive care will be provided along with hospitalization and medications, as well as the necessary requirements for relatives, Kondo said.

She added that the results of various laboratories in the health sector and the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition “Salvador Zubirán”, coincided in the presence of a fungus in all cases, and is awaiting confirmation of the results of the Institute of Diagnosis and Epidemiological Reference.

Confirmed cases have remained at 41 and so far have not increased.
