18 million Yemenis in need of aid – UN

United Nations, May 6 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations (UN) on Monday called for more support for humanitarian work in Yemen, warning that 18 million people in the country are in need of assistance.

A joint statement from 190 organizations, including major UN entities, said the lack of funding poses a challenge to the humanitarian program, leading to delays, reductions and suspensions of life-saving assistance programs.

According to figures released by the organization, the 2024 humanitarian appeal for Yemen barely received US$400 million out of the total US$2.7 billion needed, accounting for 16%.

The text asked not to ignore the important needs that persist and that cannot be addressed without adequate funding to respond.

Yemen is at a crossroads, the signatories said while recalling that humanitarian conditions improved slightly following the UN-brokered truce in April 2022.

Humanitarian needs are now driven by economic decline, deterioration of public services and infrastructure, displacement and climate-related disasters, the note warned.

At the same time, the spread of food insecurity threatens to increase malnutrition rates, particularly among pregnant and lactating women, the elderly and children, as well as the spread of cholera during the current rainy season.

The statement also warned of other consequences of the conflict on civilians, such as the nonstop violations of international humanitarian law along with the presence of explosive remains that cause deaths, injuries, displacement and restrictions.
