Mexican government considers positive meeting with Biden envoys

Mexico City, Jul 26 (Prensa Latina) Mexico today considered positive the meeting held yesterday at the National Palace with a high-level delegation from US President Joe Biden to discuss the issue of drugs, arms trafficking and migration.

This was expressed today by the Secretary of Public Security, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, when reporting today about that meeting at the morning press conference of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

She pointed out that Mexico’s priority is to achieve the pacification of the country, under the principles of zero corruption and zero impunity, and that it will continue with the persecution of human traffickers who put the lives of migrants who seek to reach the United States at risk.

She reported that electronic detection of all firearms has been established, since 70 percent of those carried by organized crime in Mexico come from the United States.

She also explained general immigration trends, noting that since Title 42 ended on May 12, 2023, irregular encounters with human traffickers and other gangs between May and June have decreased by 50 percent.

Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena also spoke on the same topic, although she focused on migration and explained that during this period, irregular encounters between May and June decreased by 50 percent, as new paths are offered for orderly, safe, regular, and humane migration.

Previously, the Government had reported that the drug trafficking crisis in North America once again led the governments of Canada, Mexico and the United States to the summit yesterday, especially due to the threat of fentanyl and to advance a joint solution to curb consumption. of this type of substance.

Mexico indicated that the three administrations also discussed strategies to counter organized crime gangs and arms smuggling, as well as address the phenomenon of migration from a human rights perspective.

The negotiations took place in two moments at the National Palace: Yesterday the second Trilateral Meeting against Synthetic Drugs was held between Mexico, the United States and Canada, which concluded “with great progress”, since the delegations of the three countries reinforced actions for these purposes.

Both countries expressed their commitment to combat illicit arms trafficking and recognized that the flow of thousands of devices each year to our country “contributes to violence and destruction on both sides of our shared border.”
