Five provinces on alert in Dominican Republic due to heavy rains

Santo Domingo, May 8 (Prensa Latina) The Emergency Operations Center (COE) of the Dominican Republic declared five provinces on 'red alert' due to the effects of a trough which will also cause heavy rainfall today.

These communities are Duarte, especially Bajo Yuna; La Vega; Puerto Plata; Montecristi, especially Martín García, Guayabito and El Rincón Manga; and Santiago Rodríguez.

In its most recent bulletin, the COE stated that ‘the trough continues to cause a humid and unstable environment, and clouds of great vertical development are observed, generating moderate to heavy downpours, thunderstorms and wind gusts in much of the country’.

Last night it rained heavily in this capital, which caused flooding in several urban areas suddenly, a situation which was also experienced in rural areas.

The COE urged the population to keep informed through official channels and to avoid crossing rivers and streams.
