France announces evacuation of its nationals from Niger

Paris, Aug 1 (Prensa Latina) The French Government informed on Tuesday that it will begin the evacuation of its citizens stranded in Niger, where the military forces seized power last week and arrested President Mohamed Bazoum.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it is preparing for the departure of French and European citizens who decide to leave the African country.

According to Paris, security is its leading objective in the aftermath of the coup, during which protests against the presence of 1,500 French soldiers in Niger, who fulfill the anti-terrorist operation in the Sahel, Barkhane, took place.

Despite Wednesday’s coup, threats to Niamey, and calls for a return to constitutional order, the situation is relatively calm.

On Monday, the ruling military junta denounced France’s alleged intention to intervene.

Following protests against its embassy and incidents, the French Government threatened an “immediate and unyielding” response if its interests were attacked.
