Death toll rises to 27 due to extratropical cyclone in Brazil

Brasilia, Sep 6 (Prensa Latina) The death toll from the extratropical cyclone, with heavy rains and winds, which hit the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, rose today to 27, according to the territorial Civil Defense.

This number was reached after six deaths were reported in the last hours in the municipality of Roca Sales, region of the Valleys.

The 27 lives lost surpassed the greatest natural tragedy of the last four decades in the state, when 16 people died in June, Governor Eduardo Leite said.

In addition to the fatalities, 2,984 people have been displaced, 1,650 have been left homeless and 66 cities have been affected.

The meteorological phenomenon had its origin in a low pressure system, which caused downpours during Monday, and as it moved towards the ocean, it gained intensity and then the cyclone was formed.
