Cuban experts to advise regional environment project

Havana, Sep 18 (Prensa Latina) Cuban experts are advising a regional project of the Island Global Environment Facility (GEF) to prevent waste generation from electrical and electronic equipment, and reuse it, and recycle it.

The initiative involves the Bahamas, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic to promote the safe management of fluorescent lamps, pesticides (persistent organic compounds), electronic waste, and plastic waste, which pose a growing threat to the environment.

Jorge Alvarez, director general of the Office of Environmental Regulation and Safety (ORSA), told the Cuban News Agency (AIN) that technical assistance exchanges were held with Rosana John, the Bahamas-based project’s legal adviser.

Alvarez added that John’s meetings illustrated, through national experiences, the enforcement in the region of the Basel Convention, which has been in force since May 1992, following its adoption in that Swiss city.

The Convention aims to minimize the generation of hazardous wastes and their cross-border movements and ensure their environmentally rational management by promoting international cooperation and establishing coordination and follow-up mechanisms.
