Former Sudanese Prime Minister faces death penalty due to accusation

Khartoum, Apr 4 (Prensa Latina) The Sudanese civil war added another fuel element today after the disclosure by the Prosecutor's Office of a list of charges against former Prime Minister Abdallah Handuk including incitement to war and crimes against humanity.

If found guilty, the 68-year-old politician could face the death penalty under the Sudanese penal code.

The only press report able to lift the veil on the charges is an enigmatic statement from anonymous sources in the media according to which the charges are related to the conflict between the president of the Sovereign Council, General Abdel Fattah al Burhan, and the leader of the Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan.

Apart from the former prime minister, 15 other unidentified people have been indicted in the case, said a report broadcast late last night on national television.

About to celebrate its second anniversary on the 15th of this month, the war between the two men has so far caused about 12,000 deaths, a figure which varies according to the sources, tens of thousands of wounded and mutilated and about two million internally displaced persons and refugees living in neighboring countries.

The material losses generated by the fierce fighting between the two sides are in the order of billions of dollars, given that the industrial and commercial infrastructure, buildings, homes and crops have been devastated.
