Former Vice President Glas would be taken to a military hospital

Quito, April 8 (Prensa Latina) Local media outlets in Ecuador today detailed that former Vice President Jorge Glas would have been transferred from the maximum security prison in Guayaquil to the military hospital in that city.

The digital portal Primicias reported that the diagnosis of self-induced deep coma is presumed, caused by the ingestion of anxiolytic, antidepressant and sedative medications. Radio Station Pichincha also published the information through its social network.

Earlier, the defense of former vice president of Ecuador warned that he was being held incommunicado after the invasion of the Mexican embassy, which culminated in his capture.

Lawyer Sonia Vera reiterated that Glas is an innocent man who is persecuted and his constitutional rights violated and warned that his life was in danger in the La Roca maximum security prison, where he remained detained.

Vera explained that at the time of his arrest, Glas was under diplomatic asylum status given by the Mexican government and was beaten by Ecuadorian law enforcement forces.

We have requested access to our client, however, to date we have no answers, Vera denounced.

Glas, considered one of the symbols of “lawfare” in Ecuador, temporarily received the benefit of pre-release on November 28, 2022, after the unification of two prison sentences of six and eight years. However, the measure was revoked.

At the beginning of this year, the justice system ordered the capture of the former official for alleged embezzlement in the case called Reconstruction of Manabí, which investigates alleged embezzlement in public works after the 2016 earthquake.

The raid on the Mexican diplomatic headquarters last Friday night of April 5, caused condemnation from the international community.

The Ecuadorian Government insists on justifying the fact and alleges there was a risk of escape for Glas, who had an arrest warrant for pending judicial proceedings, but had already received asylum from Mexico.
