Chinese president rejects competition between China and the US

Beijing, Apr 26 (Prensa Latina) Chinese President Xi Jinping urged the United States to seek common interests, respect differences, and not compete during a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

The president noted that this year marks the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries and called for helping each other to succeed instead of harming and engaging in destructive competition.

Xi advocated “honoring words with actions, instead of saying one thing and doing the opposite,” while recalling the three basic principles to guide bilateral ties: mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and mutually beneficial cooperation. “I have said many times that the planet is large enough to accommodate the common development and respective prosperity of China and the United States,” he added.

The Chinese president urged the US to view each other’s development “in a positive light” so that the relationship can stabilize, improve, and move forward.

Xi Jinping acknowledged some progress in bilateral ties after he met with US President Joe Biden last November, however, he warned about pending issues that require more efforts.

Blinken concludes a three-day agenda that first took him to Shanghai, where he met with city authorities, teachers, students, and businessmen.

The visit occurs amid renewed tensions between the two sides due to trade disagreements, US sanctions against Chinese companies, as well as Washington’s interference in the Taiwan issue, the deployment of missiles in the Philippines, and its interference in tensions around the South China Sea.

Less than a month ago, Secretary of Commerce Janet Yellen arrived in China to address the trade dispute, exacerbated by US concerns about alleged Chinese overcapacity and Beijing’s dismay at the politicization of economic issues by the United States.
