Bolivia rules out mass deportations from the US

La Paz, Feb 5 (Prensa Latina) The idea of a mass deportation of Bolivians from the United States was ruled out after statements by authorities from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bolivia.

“The consular authorities in the United States have been actively working on documentation, case monitoring and assistance to Bolivian citizens who require it (…),” said in a press conference the Vice Minister of Consular and Institutional Management, Fernando Pérez, who assured that the role of Bolivian consular offices around the world is “closely” following up on the migratory situation of Bolivian citizens in other countries, and reiterated the commitment to their protection.

Foreign Minister Celinda Sosa emphasized the commitment to safeguard the rights of fellow citizens and the importance of them approaching the consulates in the United States. She stated that, in this way, they will receive guidance and support in their migratory situation. He also announced the consular strengthening work through documentation campaigns and the activation of digital platforms to facilitate these processes. “We will continue to do all the follow-up, but we ask all those Bolivians who approach the consulates, (…) to make contact,” she stressed.

Of the more than 80 consulates and representations that Bolivia has around the world, five are located in Miami, New York, Los Angeles, Washington, and Houston, according to the records of the Foreign Ministry.

According to official data, the number of Bolivians deported remains low compared to the total carried out by the United States in 2023. According to these reports, Bolivian citizens represented only 0.09 percent of that year´s total. In 2024 the figure rose slightly to 0.1% exceeding the 271,484 last year.

Bolivian President Luis Arce urged on Tuesday to defend migration as a human right, speaking at the XII Extraordinary and Special Summit of the ALBA-TCP countries. “As an alliance (we) should be the drivers in the multilateral arena so that the United Nations declares migration as a human right. Migration is a process inherent to the history of humanity,” he said during a videoconference with his colleagues from the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-People’s Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP).

The dignitary maintained that Bolivia “ratifies its commitment to international instruments, such as the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations of 1963, which guide the protection of our communities abroad.”
