Daesh escalates terrorist attacks in Syria

Damascus, May 7 (Prensa Latina) The Islamic State (IS), or Daesh in Arabic, has escalated its terrorist actions in northeastern Syria since the beginning of this year, media reported.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), Daesh cells have carried out 77 operations since the beginning of 2025, including armed attacks, targeted killings, and bombings, resulting in the deaths of 28 people, including 18 members of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), five Daesh terrorists, and five civilians, in addition to dozens of injuries.

The province of Deir Ezzor was the most attacked, with 64 operations, resulting in the 20 deaths.

Regarding Hasakeh governorate, the SOHR recorded nine attacks and seven deaths by Daesh in recent months, while in the Raqqa province, four attacks were documented with the death of one individual and the wounding of three others.

The group’s previous attacks were carried out within areas under the control of the Kurdish Autonomous Administration, the Observatory clarified, noting that no attacks by the group’s cells have been recorded in areas under the control of the Damascus government since the beginning of this year.

The above figures reflect a significant increase in the group’s activity, which is listed as a terrorist group by the United Nations Security Council.

Despite Daesh’s loss of territory in Syria and Iraq, the figures reflect its ability to reposition itself and carry out operations through its sleeper cells. Numbers also reveals significant security challenges.
