Such legislation is being promoted by the Colorado Party in the Health Commission of the Chamber of Deputies.
The day before, the legislators received members of the Support Group for a Dignified Assisted Death in Uruguay and the Uruguayan Medical Association.
The bill proposes that people with terminal, incurable and irreversible diseases may opt for assisted death, provided that they give their express and reiterated consent. In addition, it establishes strict controls and medical protocols to guarantee ethics and safety in its application, explained the sectors that promote the initiative, which has the signatures of deputies from various parties.
The text is the result of the merger of two previous projects: the one presented by parliamentarians of the Colorado Party in March 2020 and the one proposed by legislators of the Frente Amplio in December 2021.
The authorities of the Ministry of Public Health of the previous administration of President Luis Lacalle Pou expressed their opposition to the initiative, considering that there are provisions and mechanisms for the care of terminally ill patients.
