The case, under the rapporteurship of Justice Alexandre de Moraes, revolves around possible actions by the retired congressman that could have undermined Brazilian democratic institutions, especially during his stay in the United States.
One of the measures ordered by De Moraes is the monitoring of the legislator’s social media accounts, in addition to requests for information from the US government.
These measures seek to determine whether there were any coordination or other acts that threaten the institutional order in Brazil.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, Bolsonaro Sr. may have financed his son’s stay in the United States and, therefore, is considered to have directly benefited from the conduct currently under investigation.
The judge also ordered the appearance of federal representative Lindbergh Farias, of the Workers’ Party, who filed a criminal complaint against Eduardo Bolsonaro on the same matter.
In another relevant decision, De Moraes asked Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira to inform him which U.S. diplomatic officials could be called to testify in the case.
