finland-approves-withdrawal-from-the-ottawa-treaty
Helsinki, Jun 19 (Prensa Latina) The Finnish Parliament today approved the withdrawal of the country from the Convention on the prohibition of anti-personnel mines (Ottawa Treaty), according to the results of the vote in the plenary session of the legislative body.

According to the transmission on the website of the legislative body, 157 deputies voted in favor, 18 voted against, 24 deputies were absent.

In order for Finland to cease to be considered part of the Сonvention, the proposal must first be approved by the President of the Republic, Alexander Stubb.

The relevant documents will then be sent to the UN Secretary General and only after six months, Finland will officially withdraw from the Convention.

The issue of Finland’s withdrawal from the agreement was raised in November 2024, simultaneously with Poland and the Baltic countries.

Stubb stated then that Finland had examined the possibility of withdrawing from the Ottawa Treaty due to the alleged Russian threat, although Moscow repeatedly stated that it does not intimidate anyone.
