A note from the Defense Committee of this parliamentary body, published on the Quotidiano Nazionale newspaper’s website, states that the new military corps will have about 10,000 troops, and its creation will be part of the efforts to strengthen the country’s national defense.
Deputy Nino Minardo, president of this commission, announced that, as from July 8, the government and the opposition will work together for the presentation of a unified bill related to the establishment of this voluntary auxiliary reserve.
The objective is to recruit trained ex-soldiers who can be quickly mobilized in case of emergency to join the country’s 160,000 active troops, the report notes.
According to the national budget law approved for 2025, Italy’s defense spending is expected to reach 1,57% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) this year.
However, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni recently declared that the country will reach the 2,0% of GDP target set by NATO for NATO member countries during this period.
