A report published on the website of the Corriere della Sera newspaper quotes Crosetto’s recent statements to that effect, made the day before in a news program on the Rete4 channel of the Mediaset television network, where he referred to the constitutional impossibility for Italian troops to act in such a conflict.
“I do not believe that there will ever be Italian soldiers or planes capable of bombing Iran, not only because it is constitutionally impossible, but also because there is not even the will to do so,” the defense minister stressed.
As for the US air bases on Italian territory, the minister said that Washington’s use of them “is governed by an agreement dating back to the early 1950s, which is very old”, according to which the United States “can only use them with the authorization of the Italian government”.
