Argentina’s domestic violence on the rise, Supreme Court warns

Buenos Aires, Jul 21 (Prensa Latina) Gender violence in Argentina continues to generate concern as the Supreme Court of Justice confirmed a 9 percent increase in this social problem in the first quarter of this year.

According to complaints filed, 73 percent of the victims are women, and ex-partners are the main aggressors, according to Noticias Argentinas news agency.

During January, February and March, the interdisciplinary teams of the Office of Domestic Violence (OVD) of the Supreme Court received 2,643 complaints, 9 percent more than in the same period of the previous year.

The media reports that the number is even higher due to the addition of 2,103 informative consultations, 4 percent more than in the first quarter of 2024.

Of the total number of complainants, 566 people were evaluated by the OVD medical team, of which 511 presented injuries of varying magnitude.

“Of the total number of presentations, 66 percent include affected women between 18 and 59 years of age; 36 percent involve children and adolescents; 13 percent involve males between 18 and 59 years of age, and 11 percent involve people aged 60 years or older,” Noticias Argentinas quotes.

A not minor fact highlighted in the report is that, out of the total of 884 affected men, 53 percent were under 18 years of age.
