El Salvador deals severe blow to international drug trafficking

San Salvador, July 21 (Prensa Latina) The government of El Salvador intercepted a vessel carrying more than a ton of cocaine in an operation against international drug trafficking.

The Salvadoran Navy’s report indicates that it detained a vessel carrying two Ecuadorian and one Colombian citizens southwest of the Jaltepeque estuary, carrying a cargo valued at more than $30 million.

The information reveals that with this operation, authorities have accumulated more than 35 tons of drugs seized between 2024 and 2025, which they consider a significant economic blow to organized crime, estimated at nearly $900 million.

A recent government report pointed out that 2024 was the most aggressive period in the fight against drug trafficking, with more than 17,000 tons seized in 12 months, estimated at just over $422 million, primarily cocaine, marijuana, crack cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, and methamphetamine.

The statement indicated that security forces are continuing operations in the region to curb trafficking and dismantle the criminal organizations involved, confirming the strict policy of President Nayib Bukele’s administration on this issue.
