Uruguay demands increase in minimum pension

Montevideo, July 22 (Prensa Latina) Uruguayan retirees are demanding that President Yamandú Orsi's government fulfill his campaign promises and are preparing a mobilization in this capital.

The board of directors of the National Organization of Retirees and Pensioners of Uruguay (ONAJPU) is demanding the implementation of the three percent increase in minimum pensions that Orsi promised as a presidential candidate.

ONAJPU has decided to call a rally of its members on August 7 in the capital’s Plaza Cagancha, followed by a march to the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

“This is about defending the right to a decent quality of life for women and men who have worked and contributed for 30 years,” ONAJPU’s general secretary, Estela Ovelar, told the press.

She recalled that this adjustment began on July 1, 2007, and was maintained until 2020.

During the administration of President Luis Lacalle Pou, the three percent advances were made in July, but were discounted at the end of the year.

According to the organization, there are approximately 140,000 retirees receiving the minimum pension.

ONAJPU will be represented in the social dialogue convened by the government, a forum in which they will propose social security reform.
