Brazil presents Letter in Defense of National Sovereignty

Brasilia, July 25 (Prensa Latina) More than 20 legal entities, including the Sao Paulo Academy of Law (Sao Paulo state), released a public letter in defense of Brazilian sovereignty, in response to recent measures and interference by the US government.

Other signatories of the document include the Sao Paulo Bar Association and Sao Paulo branch of the Brazilian Bar Association.

The initiative arose following the imposition, on July 9, of a 50 percent tariff on all domestic products by US President Donald Trump, who also announced a trade investigation against Brazil.

Trump said that the measure responded to an alleged “witch hunt” against former President Jair Bolsonaro, accused of being a coup plotter, and to “secret and illegal censorship orders” by the Supreme Federal Court against US companies.

On July 18, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the revocation of the visas of Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes and “his allies,” which was considered a serious interference in the Brazilian judiciary.

In response to these events, the letter maintains that “the Brazilian nation will never relinquish its sovereignty, so arduously won” and that “Brazil knows how to defend it.”

“Our sovereignty is non-negotiable. In the face of foreign attacks, we must put aside our differences and defend our greatest asset: the nation,” concludes the manifesto, which seeks to reaffirm the Brazilian people’s commitment to the democratic rule of law.
