Malaysia seeks to mediate in Thailand-Cambodia border conflict

Kuala Lumpur, July 25 (Prensa Latina) Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan expressed his country's willingness, as chair of ASEAN, to help find a solution to the escalating border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia.

According to the Foreign Minister, Malaysia is following with deep concern the clashes between Thai and Cambodian military forces on the border, which have already left several victims and are causing concern throughout the region.

Mohamad urged both parties to exercise maximum restraint and take immediate steps to reduce tensions.

He emphasized that as the current leader of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Malaysia is willing to offer assistance to facilitate a mutually acceptable way to address the issue.

Given the escalating tensions the day before, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim spoke with his Cambodian counterpart, Hun Manet, and with Thailand’s acting Prime Minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, citing the importance of resolving the border dispute through dialogue and diplomacy, in the spirit of solidarity and good neighborliness that characterizes ASEAN.

According to the president, he called on both leaders for an immediate ceasefire to avoid further hostilities and create space for peaceful dialogue and diplomatic resolution. However, so far, there are no positive signs as the clashes along the border between the armies continue.

The Thai Ministry of Health has recorded 15 dead and 46 wounded since the conflict escalated the day before, when both nations accused each other of initiating an attack, claiming that the other side attacked first.
