Uruguayan Federation carries out 24-hour strike

Montevideo, August 7 (Prensa Latina) The Uruguayan Dairy Industry Workers Federation began a 24-hour strike to denounce plant closures, layoffs, and failure to comply with agreements reached in recent negotiations.

The protest includes a rally, a march, and a public event in Plaza Artigas, Montevideo.

The Dairy Industry Workers Federation rejects the definitive closure by Lactalis Parmalat of its plant in Cardona, Soriano department, and has decided to cut off the reception of milk from that company at all facilities in the country. It also opposes the closure of the Rivera processing plant in the north, where union caravans from this capital and other towns are meeting.

The president of the Association of Workers and Employees of the National Cooperative of Milk Producers, Luis Goichea, questioned the intention to close entities with favorable financial results and denied the existence of a crisis that would justify such a decision.

For his part, Enrique Mendez, leader of the Federation of Dairy Industry Workers, stated that the company “violated collective bargaining agreements, commitments made to workers and government authorities, and misused the money provided by the dairy industry reconversion fund.”
