In the moving ceremony presided over by the Cuban ambassador in Moscow, Julio Garmendia, and the president of the Fidel Castro Fund in the Slavic nation, Leonid Savin, it was emphasized that it is an honor for all of us to be able to remember, before the monument erected in the Russian capital, the man who gave us the Revolution and the greatest lessons of solidarity and humanism.
August 13 is a very significant day for Cubans and Russian friends of solidarity, who this Wednesday commemorated the birth of a leader who played an important role in strengthening ties between the peoples of the Caribbean nation and those of the former USSR.
At the ceremony, young Isabella Gutierrez recited Carilda Oliver’s poem “Song to Fidel,” dedicated to the undefeated rebel commander, and those present placed flowers at the foot of the monument.
Today, the statue of Fidel Castro in Moscow—the same one inaugurated in November 2022 in the Moscow region of Sokol by the presidents of Cuba and Russia, Miguel Diaz-Canel and Vladimir Putin, respectively—was covered with flowers, something that is customary at this location as a sign of eternal respect.
Every year, representatives of the official Cuban mission in Moscow, the Russia-Cuba Friendship Society, the Fidel Castro Foundation, and veteran internationalists visit the monument to pay tribute to the distinguished Cuban revolutionary, in an event that is becoming a tradition among Cuba’s Russian friends.
