At a ceremony at the Cuban Embassy in Managua, participants highlighted the legacy of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution on his 99th birthday.
Cuban Ambassador Iliana Fonseca described Fidel as one of humanity’s greatest leaders of the 20th century and affirmed that he embodied the conviction that just causes are invincible when they are embraced with courage, intelligence, and trust in the nations.
Fonseca stressed, “Fidel was more than the leader of the Cuban Revolution; he was a visionary statesman, an educator, and a consistent internationalist.
His words went beyond borders, and his actions touched every place where there was a human being fighting against exploitation and injustice.”
She alluded to Fidel’s internationalism, a daily practice experienced and still practiced in several countries globally, including Nicaragua, while highlighting the figure of Sandinista commander Tomas Borge (1930-2012) on his 95th birthday.
Talia Valdes, on behalf of the young people of the state mission, noted that, under Fidel’s leadership, Cuba demonstrated that a small, blockaded, and attacked country could achieve universal literacy, free public healthcare, science at the service of the people, and internationalist solidarity.
Audiovisual materials allegorical to Tomas Borge and the Commander-in-Chief were screened, while poems were recited and the songs “Cabalgando con Fidel” (Riding with Fidel), composed by Raul Torre, and “El Necio” (The Stubborn), by Silvio Rodriguez, were performed during the ceremony.
