The complex intervention, which requires the use of state-of-the-art surgical and resuscitation techniques as well as close interdisciplinary coordination, was performed on a 38-year-old woman with an atrial communication history and severe pulmonary hypertension.
Upon hospital admission the patient’s condition was critical, with a prognosis of death, so the expert council unanimously recommended a simultaneous heart and lung transplant, the definitive therapeutic solution for cases of simultaneous heart disease and terminal lung disease.
During the surgery, which lasted seven hours, the team used cardiopulmonary bypass to temporarily replace the function of the heart and lungs, the daily Hanoi Moi reported.
The success of this simultaneous heart-lung transplant not only revitalized the patient, but opened a promising path for the treatment of patients with terminal heart and lung diseases in Vietnam, commented the publication.
