Syria signs agreement with Turkish company to import natural gas

Damascus, Aug 23 (Prensa Latina) The Syrian Energy Ministry announced on Saturday the signing of a strategic agreement with Turkiye's Nikkas Holding for the daily import of 1.6 million cubic meters of natural gas.

The Syrian General Petroleum Administration informed that the agreement was signed by Syrian Deputy Energy Minister Ghiyath Diab and Planning and Finance Director Batuhan Alkan on behalf of the Turkish company.

The Ministry clarified that this new agreement joins those existing with companies Socar, of Azerbaijan, and BOTAS, of Turkiye, within the framework of a regional strategy to strengthen energy cooperation, optimize infrastructure, and increase efficiency in the distribution of energy resources.

The supply of Azerbaijani gas to Syria began early this month. The pipeline’s opening ceremony took place in the Turkish province of Kilis, with the participation of senior representatives from Syria, Turkiye, Azerbaijan, and the Qatar Fund for Development.

Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar revealed in mid-August his country’s plans to export about 900 megawatts of electricity directly to Syria in the first quarter of 2026, as part of efforts to recover key infrastructure after years of war and power outages.
