Measures analyzed to address suicides among Uruguayan police officers

Montevideo, Aug 26 (Prensa Latina) Interior Minister Carlos Negro is leading a meeting to analyze urgent mental health measures to prevent the recurrence of police officer suicides.

Cases of police officers taking their own lives are recurring.

The most recent occurred last Friday, when a 28-year-old police officer jumped from the balcony of a building in Pocitos, Mexico City, with her two-month-old baby in her arms. Both died.

Alicia López, 28, had been certified for three years, and her last assignment was the Unified Command Center (CCU), the 911 emergency center.

According to the National Police Union, the officer did not receive the necessary care.

The union again demanded mental health care plans for the police force, where 16 of these deaths occurred last year.

Following the officer’s death, Minister Negro called an urgent meeting with the National Directorate of Police Health, the National Directorate of Gender Policies, and the Center for Assistance to Victims of Violence and Crime (CAVID) of the Ministry of the Interior.
