The implementation of peace agreements, the care of refugees and internally displaced persons, and humanitarian aid are at the center of Grandi’s agenda.
On the eve, he held a meeting with President Felix Tshisekedi.
The meeting addressed issues such as the fulfillment of the commitments undertaken in the Peace Agreement signed in Washington between Rwanda and the DRC, as well as the Doha Declaration of Principles (Qatar) between the Government and the rebels of the Alliance of the Congo River – March 23 Movement (AFC/M23).
According to the Congolese Presidency, the two parties also coordinated the key messages to be conveyed at the International Peace Conference scheduled for Paris, France, next October.
In statements to the press, the commissioner valued the agreements between the DRC, Rwanda and the rebels as a political opening that will make it possible to work more effectively on humanitarian issues.
He affirmed that UNHCR plays the role of facilitator of the dialogue and of the concrete results that may derive from it, as recently happened with Rwandan refugees who voluntarily returned to their country, after coordination with the parties.
