Violence in Haiti increases number of IDP camps

Port-au-Prince, Aug 27 (Prensa Latina) The number of Internally displaced people (IDP) camps in Haiti has increased due to the current wave of gang violence.

In its most recent report, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) revealed that between June and July 2025, the number of these sites increased from 246 to 272, an increase of 26.

These new camps were created mainly in the municipality of Belladère. Twenty sites house 1,743 people.

The clashes in the Centre department caused more citizens to flee their homes.

The IOM, according to the newspaper Le Nouvelliste, observed that the number of internally displaced persons decreased overall by 2,4%, although the number of settlements increased.

This is because three facilities in the capital housing more than 6,500 people were closed after a relocation program organized by government institutions.

The international organization noted that the West department continues to host the largest number of displaced people, followed by Centre and Artibonite.
