In a letter to the United Nations, the foreign minister stated that the three nations’ message regarding the status of the nuclear deal included a distortion of the facts, and that this approach would undermine the credibility and unity of the Security Council and its resolutions.
Araghchi added that the European trio is attempting to reverse the sequence of events to delegitimize Iran’s compensatory measures.
However, the Iranian foreign minister implicitly acknowledged that the timing of the parties’ activation of the mechanism is a fundamental issue, given that compensatory measures cannot be proposed against previous compensatory measures taken by another party.
He also dismissed as false the claim that activating the dispute settlement mechanism requires the unanimity of the nuclear deal’s members, given that the only correct and complete activation is the one Iran initiated in May 2018, which was approved by the Joint Commission and completed all its stages.
Furthermore, Araghchi reiterated Tehran’s willingness to engage in effective diplomatic interactions to reach a new agreement that respects its rights under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and simultaneously addresses all mutual concerns, including unjust sanctions.
Abbas Araghchi urged Security Council members to “reject deviant political practices and work to uphold the principles of international law and the Security Council’s mandate.”
