Russia condemns attempt to reinstate sanctions against Iran

rusia-minrex
Moscow, August 29 (Prensa Latina) Russia condemns the attempt by the E3 (Germany, France, and the United Kingdom) to reinstate UN sanctions against Iran, according to a statement from the Eurasian country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The organization noted that on August 28, the foreign ministers of Germany, France, and the United Kingdom sent an appeal to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the UN Security Council regarding Tehran’s alleged failure to comply with its obligations under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran’s nuclear program.

This appeal is presented as a notification, as provided for in paragraph 11 of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, and as the beginning of a new series of measures to reinstate UN sanctions against Iran, which have long been suspended.

In fact, it cannot be considered as such. We strongly condemn these actions by European countries and call on the international community to reject them. Such manipulations cannot entail any obligations for other states,” the statement reads.

The Foreign Ministry added that these actions by the European countries participating in the JCPOA are nothing more than a blatant attempt to manipulate the provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

“Taking advantage of the fact that the mechanism for restoring previous sanctions contained in this resolution is a unique and complex procedural structure, unprecedented in global practice, the British and European militaries assign themselves the right to interpret the procedure for its implementation as they see fit,” the statement emphasized.

However, the JCPOA and Resolution 2231 were built on the basis of a carefully calibrated balance of interests, without which the agreements cease to function.
