Bolsonaro, 70, has been under house arrest since August 4, by order of Judge Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), due to his repeated failure to comply with the precautionary measures imposed on the former president.
According to the ruling, Bolsonaro is prohibited from receiving visitors, except from his lawyers, and may only have contact with individuals authorized by the Supreme Court.
The court ruling, which establishes that surveillance must be carried out in real time and without undue exposure, also requires avoiding media indiscretions, refraining from invading the home, or disturbing the neighborhood.
At the same time, the Federal Police sent a letter to the Supreme Court of Justice (STF) requesting immediate security reinforcements at the residence. The document also calls for constant monitoring of Bolsonaro’s electronic anklet, as there is a real risk of the former head of state fleeing, according to the institution.
The document warns that Bolsonaro could attempt to enter the U.S. Embassy in Brasilia. Once inside, he would seek political asylum.
Next Tuesday, Bolsonaro will begin trial in the first chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice (STF) for inciting and participating in the attempted coup d’etat following the 2022 elections.
