Mohamed was a member of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) and that group’s nominated candidate for speaker of the Assembly after the 2020 election victory.
However, in Guyana’s traditionally two-party political landscape, marked by ethnic divisions, the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, under Mohamed’s leadership, is emerging as a political project that presents itself as a business-oriented and populist alternative.
Mohamed is a renowned entrepreneur with interests in the construction, transportation, trade, and gold sectors.
His candidacy raised concerns in the United States due to the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC)’s sanctions on him for gold trafficking.
For the September 1 elections, WIN’s platform presents itself as a movement of professionals and entrepreneurs, and its premise is that the business class, with its experience in management and job creation, is better equipped to govern the country than the traditional parties.
