Spain: Break with Israel and support for Palestine

Madrid, Sept 1 (Prensa Latina) Spain's Second Vice President, Yolanda Diaz, reaffirmed her position of severing diplomatic relations with Israel, while reiterating her support for Palestine.

The day before, Diaz, also Minister of Labor, posted messages on social media encouraging and supporting the Global Sumar Flotilla, which departed from Barcelona to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

“Thanks to the hundreds of people and boats setting sail today for Gaza to break Israel’s blockade. The Israeli government must allow their arrival,” stressed the founder of the Sumar group, one of the pillars of the national government.

In an interview with RTVE, she emphasized her call to sever ties with Israel, arguing that at this time, “they cannot look the other way. The genocide must stop.”

Spanish political parties such as EH Bildu, Podemos, ERC, Comuns, and the CUP, the latter three from Catalonia, supported the Global Sumud Flotilla and demanded that the national government immediately sever relations with Israel and impose an arms embargo.

Podemos’s political secretary and MEP, Irene Montero, denounced the violation of international law, while stating that “the silence and inaction is a form of complicity on the part of the main European governments, the United States, and also the Spanish government.”

“A total arms embargo on Israel and the immediate severing of all diplomatic and commercial relations,” Montero demanded.
