Haiti to launch new literacy campaign in October

Port-au-Prince, Sept 2 (Prensa Latina) Haiti's new Secretary of State for Literacy, Mozart Clerisson, announced that the country will launch a campaign in October to teach thousands of citizens how to read and write, local press reported.

Clerisson explained to his team that training centers will be reactivated throughout the Caribbean nation.

“The more Haitians who know how to read and write, the more chances we will have to move forward and make the economy move on,” Clerisson stated, as quoted by the online newspaper Haiti Libre.

In 2001, Haiti implemented the “Yes, I Can” literacy method, an educational program developed by educator Leonela Relys in Cuba.

This plan combines numbers and letters in a literacy primer, using audiovisual media to facilitate learning.

Since the Cuban method was implemented in Haiti in August 2010, more than 150,000 people over the age of 15 have learned to read and write.

Between 2002 and 2009, nearly three and a half million people worldwide learned to read and write using Cuba’s “Yes I Can” method.
