The initiative proposes prohibiting the use of these technologies from preschool through sixth grade and establishing regulations for their appropriate use in secondary school. Thus, the bill aims at reclaiming the classroom as a space for concentration and deeper learning, and to boost responsible use of technology in the educational process.
During the debate, the senators pointed to scientific evidence of the problems caused by cell phones, such as lack of concentration, decreased memory, poor reading comprehension, anxiety, and difficulties in learning and socializing.
A student checks their phone on average every 12 minutes in the classroom, and this not only affects their learning but also the group as a whole.
Children and adolescents are reaching at these devices at an early age, as well as social media platforms that are not designed for educational purposes, the parliamentarians warned.
According to data published here, 55.7 percent of Chilean adolescents aged 15 and over do not reach the minimum reading comprehension level, which forces schools to face complex realities.
According to the information published on the Senate website, the initiative is in its second phase in the National Congress and must now be specifically studied by the Education Committee.
