In a statement released by the spokesman for the head of the United Nations (UN), Stephane Dujarric, Guterres lamented the more than 400 deaths recorded in recent days and the disaster caused by the so-called monsoon rains, aggravated by climate change.
The phenomenon affected around 1.5 million people and left hundreds of thousands in need of humanitarian aid.
More than 3,000 homes, 400 schools and some 40 health centers were damaged, according to the text.
Guterres acknowledged the efforts made to evacuate more than one million people in Punjab and expressed his solidarity with the people of Pakistan.
He also conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. The UN and its partners are working closely with the Pakistani authorities to assess the impact of the floods, identify needs and address gaps in the disaster response, he said.
