Spain: Terrible devastation from wildfires

Madrid, Sept 5 (Prensa Latina) More than 300,000 hectares were devastated in Spain during last August forest fires, but the threat of further fires remains, a senior government official said.

Third Vice President Sara Aagesen stated that the total number of hectares burned last month in Spain was 336,345, with the regions of Galicia, Castilla y Leon, and Extremadura accounting for 97% of the damaged area.

During an appearance before the Commission for Ecological Transition in the Congress of Deputies, Aagesen provided details of the fires.

She explained that the statistics for areas devastated by fire are seven percent lower due to adjustments to satellite data.

In this regard, she specified that the largest area affected was in Galicia, with 143,628 hectares; Castilla y Leon, 141,264 hectares; and Extremadura, 41,525 hectares.

The Minister for Ecological Transition and Demographic Retrogression also noted that the remaining 10,000 hectares damaged are spread across Asturias, Andalusia, Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha, Navarra, Aragon, and the Valencian Community.
