Gaza City under Israeli attack, Palestinians flee south

Ramallah, Sept 7 (Prensa Latina) Gaza City continued to be under intense Israeli bombardment as part of an offensive to reoccupy the northern part of the Strip, amid strong international condemnation and the mass exodus of Palestinians to the south.

Regional media reported dozens of deaths and injuries this Sunday as a result of a new wave of attacks by the Israeli Armed Forces (IDF) against the city.

Medical sources reported that eight people were killed and several more injured in an airstrike targeting the Al-Farabi school, which housed displaced persons in that area.

Eleven others died, including four children, in two similar incidents targeting a tent in the al-Rimal neighborhood and an apartment in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood.

In the last 48 hours, the IDF began demolishing residential towers in the city, which Israel has not attacked to date to avoid further international condemnation.

The bombing campaign intensified the mass exodus of Palestinians to the southern region of the Strip, despite insistent calls by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) for the population to remain in the city.

The armed group accused the neighboring country of forcing the displacement and carrying out a policy of “systematic ethnic cleansing against innocent civilians.”

According to the IDF, the military now controls more than 40% of Gaza City, the most populous in the territory.

The United Nations estimates that the ground campaign to reoccupy the city endangers the lives of nearly one million Palestinians and, therefore, called for a halt to the operation, although Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised that it would continue to the end.
